Subscript numbers
Old 2006-11-07

I'm trying to display chemical compounds (e.g H₂SO₄) in a flash html text field by importing CDATA from an xml file.

However when flash displays the text it displays like this, H₂ SO₄ - essentially it leaves a gap after the subscript text.

I'm using ASCI codes for the 2 and the 4 as subscript doesn't work in flash. As you can see in html displays just fine. Does anybody have a solution for this?

Kind regards,

Luke

did you embed all the needed characters in your dynamic text field ?

I tried by embedding ALL characters (I'm just using arial and have tried with courier and times new roman) but flash does not recognise the characters if you embed. The only way I could get the characters to show was by not embedding so it pulls the character from the systems character map.

So in short, flash is getting the characters (H₂SO₄) but it also leaves a gap after the 2 and the 4. I've just noticed there's a gap when IE renders (not in flash now) the ASCI codes too - up till now I've only tested the HTML in firefox. Either way, when flash renders the ASCI code it leaves gaps.

I forgot to say, try viewing this page in both firefox and IE and you should see the effect I trying to overcome.

Hi have you tried copying them from the system character map?

Start > Run - Type "charmap" and press ok

You could trying copying them from there and embedding the specific characters from there.

I guess this is just like using the ASCI codes, but you never know...

I've not found the ideal solution so I'm settling for a comprimise, I'm going to simply change the font size for the 2 and 4 so they are smaller than the rest of the text.

Like I said, it's not ideal as strictly it's not written correctly (client talking, not me) but it means no more time is spent trying to resolve this. Maybe the next version of flash will resolve.

Cheers!

5^2

Is another alternative obviously but probably not ideal...

I want to share with you the way I get may subscript and superscript inin dynamic and input text field in Flash:
& tags are not supported by Flash but you can
use Subscript & Superscript in dynamic and input text field in Flash:

Download & install Subscript & Superscript fonts from http://www.subscriptfont.com or http://www.superscriptfont.com
You will need to restart Flash software after installed fonts.
Create a dynamic text field with Arial font embeded. Set the HTML property to true.
Create a dynamic text field with Subscript font embeded.
Create a dynamic text field with Superscript font embeded.
Use HTML tag to set text to subscript or superscript like below:
Some text<font face="Superscript\">©</font>
If you are using ActionScript to test the htmlText, use script like below:
my_txt.htmlText = "Some text<font face='Superscript'>TM</font>";
Data can come from a XML file, TEXT file or from flash itself.
